ABOUT
Building Food Security
from the Ground Up
We're a DGR-registered organisation turning community ideas into operating businesses. One suburb at a time.
Our Origin Story
How we discovered a broken system and decided to fix it
Food Waste Meets Food Insecurity
In 2018, we noticed something broken: Australia wastes 7.6 million tonnes of food every year while 1 in 6 people experience food insecurity. Traditional solutions - food banks, donations, charity models - weren't addressing the root cause: our food systems aren't circular.
What if communities could fix it themselves?
We asked: What if the community could design, fund, and own the solutions? What if food waste became compost that grew food in local gardens? What if residents could invest in the cafes, gardens, and food hubs they wanted to see?
Proof of Concept: Marrickville 2023
We launched our first pilot in Marrickville in early 2023. 89 community members submitted ideas. 347 people voted. The winning project - Marrickville Community Garden - raised $8,500 from 43 local investors and launched 4 months later. It now serves 200 families and delivers 18% annual returns.
